The National Juvenile Indoor Championships continued this weekend in Athlone where the high standard of competition allowed for some exciting races and performances from all the young athletes.
Dylan O Reilly’s gold medal in the U12 600m topped the Shercock AC performances and certainly brightened his day after his 4th place finish in the 60m on Saturday.
Erelle O’Sullivan ran well in her heat of the Girls U14 800m but produced a stellar performance in her final to finish a very close 4th place in a super time of 2.20.83. Erelle also competed in the Girls U14 long jump with a best jump of 4.08m.
In the Girls U16 200m there were three heats. Eadaoin Lynch placed 3rd in her heat in a time of 26.43secs, securing herself a coveted place in the final where she finished 6th. Eadaoin also competed in the Girls U16 60m where she finished 3rd in her heat in a time of 8.17 secs. but was just outside of the qualifying times for the final.
Shane Mulligan produced a strong run in his U19 200m, placing 3rd in his heat in 23.65secs also earning himself a place in the final where he finished 5th.
Mark Kearns competed in the Boys U16 1500m. Mark got off to a great start and was running comfortably up to the half way stage where he was in 3rd place. However, in the latter stages of the race, Mark was unable to hold on to the leading group and finished 7th in 4.18.69. Mark should be happy with his performance considering he has just returned to training following an injury.
Two of our youngest athletes, Ronan Rogers and Sarah Kate Liggan were competing at the National Indoor Championships for the first time. Ronan competed in the Boys U12 60m and long jump and Sarah Kate Liggan competed in the Girls U13 60mH and long jump. Both Ronan and Sarah Kate took the occasion in their stride and will have gained valuable experience for future competitions.
